Choosing a Medium

Your choice of medium is important.

Engaging with the medium, fiddling around, and expecting something to happen, invites the unconscious spontaneously into the space. One does not have to wait until you have a clear image in mind. Here we see just how important a receptive approach to the creative medium is:

The inner critic can be a paralyzing force. Structuring the space provides safety and containment and I have found that the right medium can go a long way in giving one just enough initial breathing space to get the process going.

The medium that we choose might play a significant role in the outcome of the creative process. Enjoying your medium goes a long way towards inviting the inner energy to join, it is a great start. Finding a suitable medium might take some searching and can be a journey in itself, well worth the undertaking. It is not all about painting and drawing. Childhood preferences may give an indication of which medium to try. On the other hand, things change as we grow older. Simpler is better; messier is better. Still, it must work for you.

Various kinds of paint are available, acrylic, gauche, watercolor, oil. Then there is charcoal, which you can also use with paint. Clay or other forms of modelling speaks to some people. You might work in stone or wood or carve soap or build something. Or whatever appeals to you.
